(EU) EP/JHA: Parliament wants anti-corruption policy in Europe
Brussels, 18/02/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 18 February, MEPs launched a petition calling on the European Commission and member states to propose anti-corruption legislation, particularly with regard to relations between the EU and third countries. MEPs want the EU to guarantee the transparency and predictability of aid allocated to partner countries. They say that the EU should demand that the extractive industry (for example, involved in mining) regulated in the EU jurisdictions should fully disclose payments to the governments of the countries where they operate. The EU should also better coordinate its efforts to halt tax evasion and illegal financial activities that are made possible through the use of offshore tax haven. Furthermore, the EU, the United States and other partners should share a list of officials, and their immediate family, against whom there is credible evidence of corruption. Some people should even be banned from holding property in EU member states and assets of targeted individuals held in European bank accounts should be frozen. MEPs also believe that the EU should prioritise the fight against corruption in all EU policies and spending. The petition was launched by Ana Gomes (PES, Portugal), Fiona Hall (ADLDE, UK), Jose Ribeiro e Castro (EPP-ED, Portugal), Luisa Morgantini (GUE/NGL, Italy), Marie-Hélène Aubert (Greens/EFA, France) and Ryan Eoin (UEN, Ireland). The petition, also supported by Global Witness and Transparency International, is available at http: //www.stopcorruption.eu
